Honeymoon Garden

Empire reimagines the journey of an all-boys Austrian football team on their naively hedonistic adventure through the Dutch East Indies in 1934. For these young travellers, the Indies appeared as an illusive playground with lush parties, beautiful Sundanese women, and Austrianised customs far from familiar Middle Europe. Few among them noticed what lay beyond the invisible yet ever-present colonial walls. No one, except the great-grandfather of Marten, an Austrian–Indonesian who traced his family’s roots through a speculative and fictitious research process with playwright Christian Winkler. Based on a personally fictionalised and fictionally personal manuscript, acclaimed actor Marten Schmidt described as delivering a 'first-rate acting performance' retells his great-grandfather’s diary, offering a rare first-hand account of Austrian and European life in the colonies. Directed by Austrian theatremaker Franz von Strolchen, Empire is a unique interlingual performance about colonialism, set within eerie and illusive soundscapes that blend techno beats with Gamelan. It is performed in German, Indonesian, Dutch, and English, with surtitles in English and Indonesian. Led by Schmidt and the extraordinary Austrian singer-songwriter Anna Anderluh, known from the Cairo Jazz Festival, this live music theatre piece reimagines a tragicomic colonial adventure through a critical and poetic lens on European imperialism. Empire subtly, tragically and playfully explores how football became a tool of colonial power and Dutch supremacy.
