Enchanted Bali: Drawings by the Children of Batuan

Let the young artists of Studio Gelombang Batuan take you on a heartfelt journey through their Bali—an island reimagined through vibrant colours, natural pigments, and timeless tradition in this enchanting exhibition.

Enchanted Bali invites you into the imaginative world of the children of Studio Gelombang Batuan. It is a world rich with meaning and deeply rooted in nature and the cultural heritage of Bali. As you explore the artworks in this exhibition, you will discover how the younger generation views their homeland, expressed through heartfelt lines, forms, and visual stories.

Each piece you encounter is the result of artistic exploration and learning at Studio Gelombang, an alternative art space founded in 2018 by Balinese artist Made Griyawan in the village of Batuan. This studio is a place where children and teenagers come together to learn, express themselves, and help preserve the Batuan painting tradition, a visual style that has flourished for over a thousand years.

Studio Gelombang is more than a space for learning. It also hosts exhibitions and workshops and is known for its sustainable approach to art-making. You will see how natural pigments such as butterfly pea flowers, mangosteen peels, and turmeric are used in these artworks. All of these materials are sourced from the studio's own garden and reflect a deep respect for nature and a strong commitment to environmental care.

Through this exhibition, you are invited to see how a classical tradition can be carried forward, reimagined, and brought to life by young hands. With honesty, imagination, and courage, these young artists share how they see, experience, and feel Bali today.
