Rumah Kayu

Handbook for the Displaced is Robin Block’s exploration of identity through his grandparents’ experiences arriving in the Netherlands from independent Indonesia. Confronted with an unwelcoming new country, they struggled with a sense of belonging, and the naturalisation service’s pamphlets offered little assistance. The book reflects Block’s own search for identity, balancing cultures and nationalities as he travels to modern Indonesia. Through encounters with diverse characters—a Javanese ancestral mother, a secretive Jakartan influencer, and an enigmatic guide—Block brings 400 years of history to life with rich imagery and subtle humor. This poetry collection weaves personal experiences with universal history, offering insights for those navigating their place among nations.

Finding Sita in the Indies by Angelina Enny follows Ernest Agerbeek as he meets a ghost storyteller, an opium-smuggling girl, and a group of Chinese men in his quest for a feminine figure who will shape his national identity. These encounters lead him to a deeper understanding of the 1930s and beyond as part of his personal history. Will Ernest succeed in his search in the Dutch East Indies?
