Alang-Alang Stage

This Indonesian documentary film directed, co-written, and produced by Lola Amaria explores the impact of Cold War political events in the 1960s. During this period, many Indonesian students sent by the government to study in the Soviet Union (Russia) and China found themselves unable to return to Indonesia after the 1965 events. Stranded and crossing various countries without status, they sought refuge in any nation willing to accept them, losing contact with their families in Indonesia, who were also affected by the political turmoil.

The film portrays their stories and those of others like them, reflecting an enduring desire to find a way home. They symbolize thousands who shared their fate and fell victim to violence. These individuals are living monuments to violence, their suffering passed down through generations. This inherited violence manifests as deep-seated fears in the minds, hearts, and instincts of each generation, like massive chains binding the hands, feet, and thoughts of their descendants. While they search for a way home, the next generation seeks freedom from fear.
