I Wayan Gde Yudane is a highly awarded Balinese composer and one of the leading figures in contemporary and experimental music in Indonesia. Known for his diverse work across Balinese gamelan, Western ensembles, electro-acoustic performance, film, and theatre, he has collaborated with groups such as NZTrio, the New Zealand String Quartet, Australian Art Orchestra for The Theft of Sita, and Momenta Quartet. His compositions explore new ideas across Eastern and Western traditions, often creating fast-moving, expansive soundscapes. With Gamelan Wrdhi Swaram, he performed Aquifers, a landmark contemporary gamelan work. His score for The Theft of Sita in 2000, with Paul Grabowsky, won the Melbourne Age Critics Award and the Helpmann Award for Best Original Music Score. He has received numerous honours, including nine Best Composition awards for Balinese gamelan, the Adikara Nugraha Award in 1999, the Kerti Budaya Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018, and the Indonesia Cultural Award in 2020.
